Artist Statement
My work is rooted in the wild and weathered beauty of Newfoundland; its nature, wildlife, and heritage. Through painting, drawing, and mixed media, I explore the quiet strength and resiliency that defines our island: the enduring buildings, the rugged coastlines, the adaptable wildlife, and the people who live in rhythm with the land.
Using materials such as acrylic, oil, graphite, and colored pencil, I focus on texture, form, and the negative spaces between; the shapes that tell a deeper story of survival and adaptation. Whether working on canvas or large scale murals, my approach is both observational and intuitive, guided by a deep respect for our environment and a desire to preserve it.
As a lifelong artist with specific interest in nature, I’m drawn to the layers of history embedded in the landscape and the visual language of endurance: chipped paint, weathered wood and lichen-covered cliff faces. These elements, to me, are symbols of place, memory, and identity.


Bio
 Kelly Joy is a visual artist based in Newfoundland, Canada whose work reflects the island’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and enduring spirit. Working primarily in acrylic, oil, graphite, and mixed media, they explore themes of resilience, ecology, and place.
Drawing since the age of four and painting since twelve, their artistic development was shaped by mentorships with a accomplished landscape painter in the mid-1990s and later with a professional muralist in 2019. With an education in both graphic design and nursing, their practice bridges visual storytelling and a deep care for the land and its communities.
They have exhibited in both solo and group shows throughout Newfoundland, including as part of the CNVAS collective, and have completed several mural commissions. An artist residency has supported their continued exploration of texture, space, and the visual language of endurance in the natural world.
As a visual artist, their work is a tribute to the rugged beauty and quiet persistence of the places and wildlife that call Newfoundland home.
